John Portman founded the charity Action for Happiness after growing frustrated with the lack of happiness research in Britain. Action for Happiness is the only independent organisation that funds independent research into the causes of happiness. Action for Happiness has won awards for its work including the Royal Society of Arts' People and Planet Award, which celebrates "outstanding individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to their own planet".
